Juneteenth Parade & Celebration on Broadway & at the Ted Stroebele Recreation Center

Juneteenth Parade & Celebration on Broadway & at the Ted Stroebele Recreation Center

The Library is partnering with The Sullivan County NAACP Chapter and the Village of Monticello in planning a parade and celebration from 11:30 am - 1:00 pm RAIN OR SHINE.

The parade will commemorate and celebrate the Juneteenth Federal Holiday.  The parade line-up starts at 10:30 am at the Monticello Village Hall parking lot at 2 Pleasant Street.  Beginning promptly at 11:30 am, parade participants will march down Broadway in Monticello ending at the Ted Stroebele Recreation Center at 10 Jefferson Street. Immediately following the parade will be a reception, refreshments, and vendor tables in the Ted Stroebele courtyard from 1:30 pm 3:00 pm that includes speakers and music.  If it rains activities will take place inside the Recreation Center.

Juneteenth — a combination of June and 19th — commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union General Gordon Granger read federal orders in Galveston, Texas, stating that all previously enslaved black people in Texas were free. The day, marking the official end of enslavement has been celebrated as a holiday by Black Americans since the late 1800s.

All are welcome to celebrate by marching in the parade and celebrating this holiday afterward at the Ted Stroebele Recreation Center.  Tribute will be paid to Elaine Williams, an integral force in the local NAACP chapter up until her passing in 2022.
