"Unconditional Enfranchisement" by Oliver King In-Person
"Unconditional Enfranchisement," a virtual program by Oliver King performing as Frederick Douglas (1818-1895), is based on an oration by Douglass entitled 'What the Black Man Wants' delivered to the 32nd annual meeting of the Massachusetts Antislavery Society in Boston, Massachusetts January 25, 1865. During the Reconstruction era, Frederick Douglass demanded government action to secure land, voting rights, and civil equality for Black Americans. This speech broaches the Freedmen's right to vote as well as the right of women to vote. Douglass escaped slavery and went on to promote the Abolitionist Movement and became a renowned speaker.
