‘The Music of George Gershwin’ In-Person

Kenneth Korn, noted lecturer, virtually traces Gershwin’s amazing personal biography as a piano prodigy to a professional pianist to Broadway composer and then to the concert hall.  Korn discusses those traits that make his music so unique.   How he fused modern music with traditional, European sounds with American,  Symphonic with Jazz and popular with classical. George Gershwin’s music is a timeless joy.  While it is impossible not to feel uplifted anytime you hear one of his delightful broadway tunes, he also is a composer of true significance from an academic and music history perspective. The Rhapsody in Blue is the most performed work of symphonic music by any American composer.   There is no better composer to bring listeners to the magnificent world of symphonic music than George Gershwin.  He wrote funny and timeless show tunes such as “You say Ee-ther and I say Eye-ther,” but also the Opera ``Porgy and Bess.”  He wrote adorable symphonic miniatures such as “Walking the Dog'' but also his powerful “Piano Concerto in F.” The presentation blends both live and recorded performances.  Gershwin did not compose his show tunes to a lower standard than his symphonic music.  Kenneth Korn will show how the same  level of sophistication found in his ‘An American in Paris’ is also found in ‘Fidgety Feet’.  Likewise, the wit and humor of his show tunes permeates his concert works as well. Mr. Korn has a diverse and broad knowledge of music.  He is a graduate of Washington University in St. Louis and The Crane School of Music. Currently, Ken plays flute and piccolo in the Paramus Orchestra, the Orange County Band, the Maybrook Wind Ensemble, and the Kemyndable Flute Trio.
