Jazz and the Civil Rights Movement - A Virtual Program In-Person
This virtual lecture/music performance begins with a flute prelude by master flutist Galen Abdur-Razzaq followed by a presentation chronicling the music from the turn of the century to the present day highlighting various artists, their music, their influence on the evolution of jazz, and their struggles. It also illustrates how jazz became an advocate for the Civil Rights Movement with proceeds from jazz concerts used to finance major events such as the Freedom Rides and the March on Washington of 1963. The lecture is infused with music demonstrations.
